Volcano Science Project for Kids

Volcanos are one of the most popular Science projects for kids.  Below are easy and fun steps to make your volcano erupt. This project is simple enough to make for kids of all ages.
The volcano will erupt so if you’re doing it inside place a towel under the bottle before starting.
Materials: Bottle (small soda bottle works great), Baking Soda, Vinegar, Red Food Coloring 
Step 1: Fill the bottle a little less than half way with vinegar

 

 

 

 

 

Step 2: Add 10-15 drops of red food coloring

 

 

 

 

 

Step 3: Pour about 1/4 cup of baking soda into the bottle

 

 

 

 

 

Step 4: Watch your volcano erupt

What happened?
When the baking soda is added bubbles should form and pour over the side of the volcano.  Why does this happen?  The baking soda is a base and the vinegar is the acid.  When they are combined they let out carbon dioxide which create the fizzing bubbles.
Kids Play and Create tip:
The above steps were for making the volcano erupt.  The design of the volcano is what really makes the project.  Here is an example of how you can make your volcano
Make clay and sculpt it into a volcano.  Make a hole in the top using the same bottle (do this before the experiment) by pressing it through the top of the volcano. Push the bottle down so it hits bottom.  Make sure the top of the bottle sticks out the top of the volcano.  Pull out the bottle.  You will put it back once the clay dries
Use the bottle to try out your experiment.
When the clay dries from the volcano ( about 2 -4 days) paint and decorate your volcano
When it is completely dry place your bottle inside the volcano and try your experiment.
