How to Make Button Candy for Kids, Fun Cooking Activity for Kids

Making button candy can be easy and fun for children of all ages, especially when you follow this 3 ingredient recipe.  I did this activity with my niece age 11 and my daughter age 2 and it was a big hit with both of them.  It’s a fun summer time cooking activity because you don’t need to use the oven or any heat source, which is great on hot days.  Follow the step-by-step directions below to make your very on button candy.

Materials/Ingredients: Kool-Aid packet (one for each flavor button candy you want), 1 1/2 cups powered sugar, 1 egg white, plastic sandwich bag (one per flavor), blender,  bowl to mix, cup (one per flavor), scissor, wax paper

Step 1: Cut wax paper into thin strips about 3 inches wide.

Step 2: Pour 1 1/2 cups powered sugar into a bowl.  Add one egg white.  Mix on high with a hand mixer for 5-7 minutes.  The mixture should look a little whipped.

Step 3: Put a sandwich bag in a cup so that it covers the cup and you can easily add in the powered sugar and egg white mixture.  Repeat this for each Kool-Aid packet you are going to use.

Step 4: Pour an equal amount of mixture into each cup.  Add in a little less the 1/4 teaspoon of the Kool-Aid packet. Repeat this with each Kool-Aid flavor.  Mix together by squishing outside of the sandwich bag with your hands (the kids love this part).

Step 5: Using the scissors, cut the the very tip of the sandwich bag.

Step 6: Using the sandwich bag make small dots on the wax paper. If you get peaks on your dots just press down with your finger.
