This cute yarn butterfly magnet craft is great for Spring. It allows kids to explore their creativity and use their imagination to make a cute craft.

This craft is perfect for kids ages 8 and up, as wrapping the yarn might be tricky for younger children.

These butterflies make excellent gifts for Mother’s Day and look beautiful on refrigerators or cabinets. Follow the step-by-step directions below to make your very own yarn butterfly magnet craft.

Spring butterfly magnet craft.

  • 2 popsicle sticks
  • yarn (as many colors as you want.  I use 2, purple  and a multi-color yarn)
  • Peel and Stick magnet,
  • 3 pony beads ( I used one larger bead pom-pom for the head)
  • scissors
  • pipe cleaner
  • hot glue or tacky glue

Making a Butterfly Magnet Craft

Step 1: Place one popsicle on top of the other to create an X. Take one yarn and wrap it around the middle.

Step 2: Continue to wrap the yarn around in an under, over pattern. To change colors, knot the end and start with a new color.

Step 3: Continue to wrap the yarn around the popsicle sticks until it is close to the ends.

Step 4: Wrap the pipe cleaner around the middle of the popsicle sticks, as shown in the picture below.  Place two beads at the bottom.

Step 5: Twist the pipe cleaner over the two popsicle sticks. Place the bigger bead on top. This will be the butterfly’s head.

Step 6: Cut the top of the pipe cleaner to the desired length.  Curl the ends to look like antennas.

Step 7: Even though I used peel-and-stick magnets, I still used hot glue. I wanted to make sure that the magnet wouldn’t come loose and fall off. You can also use tacky glue. When your magnet is completely dry, place it on the refrigerator or cabinet.

Are you using your Butterfly magnet as a gift? You can have the kids wrap it with tissue paper and secure it with tape.
