How to Make a Spring Butterfly, Butterfly Craft for Kids

This cute yarn butterfly magnet craft is great for Spring.  I recommend doing it with ages 8 and up, as wrapping the yarn might be tricky for the younger children. These butterflies make excellent gifts for Mother’s Day and look beautiful on refrigerators or cabinets. Follow the step-by-step directions  below to make your very own yarn butterfly magnet craft.

Materials: 2 popsicle sticks, yarn (as many colors as you want.  I use 2, purple  and a multi-color yarn), magnet, 3 beads ( I used one larger bead pom-pom for the head), scissors, pipe cleaner, hot glue or tacky glue

Step 1: Place one popsicle on top of the other to create an X. Take one yarn and start wrapping it around the middle.

Step 2: Continue to wrap the yarn around in an under, over pattern. To change colors knot the end and start with a new color.

Step 3: Continue to wrap the yarn around the popsicle sticks until it is close to the ends.

Step 4: Wrap the pipe cleaner around the middle of the popsicle sticks as shown in the picture below.  Place two beads at the bottom.

Step 5: Twist the pipe cleaner over the top of the two popsicle sticks.  Place the bigger bead on top.  This will be the butterfly’s head.

Step 6: Cut the top of the pipe cleaner to desired length.  Curl the ends to look like antennas.

Step 7: Use hot glue or tacky glue to glue the magnet on the back.  Let dry.  When your magnet is completely dry place on the refrigerator or cabinet.  You can also wrap in tissue paper and give as a gift.
