Potty (Leslie Patricelli board books)
Potty by Leslie Patricelli is an adorable easy-to-read book. It is our top pick when picking a potty training book. This book is about an adorable bald baby who has to go potty. He is trying to decide whether I should go in my diaper or somewhere else. In the book, there is a part where he sees where a dog goes potty and where a cat goes potty. Ultimately he decides to give his toddler potty a try. At the end of the book, he is running with toilet paper to celebrate using the potty. Then shows different kinds of underwear to pick out. It’s a great book, funny and written in simple short sentences, which is great for a toddler with a short attention span. This book is recommended for toddlers ages 1-3. Potty Training Tips
Don’t Force them: Just because you’re ready for your child to use the potty doesn’t mean they are. They are unprepared if they scream and cry whenever you mention the potty. It will be more difficult for you to force them, and it will be traumatic for them.
Don’t worry; no child goes to kindergarten in diapers. They will be ready before you know it, and then when they are finally trained, part of you will be sad that your baby’s growing up.
Aim: This tip is for all parents with little boys. If you have a sprayer and he is making a mess, try using Cheerios. Place 5 or 6 Cheerios in the potty and ask your little one to aim for the holes. When he tries, reward him with a prize.
Don’t Switch Back and Forth: Don’t switch from diapers or pull-ups to underwear and back again. Once you choose underwear, stick to it.
Role Model: Moms take their daughters with them when they use the bathroom, and dads do the same. Explain to your child what you are doing. If they see you do it, they may feel more comfortable doing it.
Read, Read, Read: Potty books are great and ease the fear of going. Children can relate to the characters in the story.
Let them pick out their underwear: Letting them pick out the underwear they like will excite them about wearing them. I learned this firsthand. My daughter was giving me a really hard time about using the potty. She straight-up refused.
One day, we were in the store, and I let her pick out panties. She picked out Minnie Mouse panties and wanted to put them on when we got home. She still gave me a hard time about going to the potty, but she still wore panties, which helped in the training process.
Bribery: We have all been there. Tell your child if they use the potty, they can get a lollipop, a small toy, or whatever they want. It’s OK. As I said, we all do it.
Reward Chart: Tape a chart next to the potty and keep stickers in the bathroom. Every time your child uses the potty, give them a sticker. Once they get five stickers, reward them with a small prize. I did this, and it worked.
