What Happens in Fall/Autumn

  • In Fall you will notice that the leaves on the trees start to change color but only on some trees.
  • There are two types of trees Deciduous and Evergreens.  Deciduous tree leaves change color but Evergreens do not.
  • So why do the leaves change color and drop from the trees?  Lack of food and water is the answer. Read more below.
  • Leaves contain chlorophyll which make the leaves green.  They also contain xanthophyll which make the leaves look yellow and carotene which make the leaves look orange.
  • During the Spring and Summer the leaves look green because photosynthesis is occurring. Photosynthesis the progress on how the leaf gets food and water.
  • The chlorophyll gets light from the sun and water from the ground, turns it into food and stores it in the leaf.
  • During the Fall the days get shorter and the chlorophyll cannot get enough light from the sun needed to make food.  The leaf lives off the stored food and starts to loose chlorophyll and their green color.
  • When the chlorophyll leaves the leaf the yellow and orange colors start to show.  When all the stored food is used up the leaf dies, turns brown and falls from the tree.
  • Some animals start preparing for Winter during Fall.
  • Animals that hibernate such as bears prepare for Winter by eating more to put on body fat to make it through the Winter.
  • You will see some animals such as squirrels collect more food and store it so they have enough for the Winter.
  • Fall is the time of year where you can go pumpkin and apple picking.
