Colorful Sand Art 2 ways

What kid doesn’t like playing with sand! This is a fun activity that can be done 2 ways.

First you can either buy colored sand at any craft or toy store or you can make  your own.
Make your own colorful sand 
 

Materials:  1 cup sand, 2 tablespoons powder paint (can be found at Michael’s or any craft store), Jars with lids

 

*You need 1 cup of sand and 2 tablespoons of powder paint per color

 

Step 1: Place one-2 cups of sand into each jar.

Step 2: Add powder paint to each jar. Put the lid on tightly and shake. Mix sand with powder paint until color is blended. If you want a brighter color add more powdered paint.

 

Your colored sand is now ready to use!

 
Traditional Sand Art

Materials: small empty bottles with lid, colored sand and a funnel (if you do not have a funnel roll a piece of paper and place it inside the top of the bottle and use it as a funnel).

Step 1:   Layer the different colored sand in the bottle until you reach the top and securely close. If you want try to make a pattern.

Sand Art Paint

Materials: paper, liquid glue, colored sand, pencil

Step 1: Have child draw a picture on the paper with a pencil.

Step 2: Have child outline picture with glue on section at a time.  Pour sand over glue and shake excess off.  Repeat.

 

Play Dough/Clay Recipes

Kids love playing with play dough and clay.  They will be entertained while showing their creative side. 

These recipes below are easy to make and I find work the best for creating great projects. 

Dough making tips:

1. If mixture is too sticky add more flour

2. If you use the air dry clay recipe, be sure the shapes are not too thick.  The thicker they are, the longer they will take to dry.

Creative tips:  

1. Add Glitter to the dough while kneading for an extra sparkle

2. Use cookie cutters to create shapes

3. Make ornaments by using a pencil to poke a hole at the top of your shape. After decorating put string through the hole to hang.

 

Kool-Aid Play Dough 

Materials: 1 1/2 cups flour, 1/2 cup salt, 2 packages of unsweetened  Kool-Aid drink mix, 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil, 2 cups of boiling water 

Step 1: Mix the Kool-Aid, flour and salt in large bowl

Step 2: Have an adult add 2 cups of boiling water the mixture, stir

Step 3: When the mixture has cooled down,  knead dough into a ball until color has blended

Step 4: When you are finished playing with the dough, store in an air tight container or zip lock bag and keep in the refrigerator

 

Jell-O Play Dough

Materials: 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup salt, 2 tablespoons of cream of tartar, 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 cup war water, 1 3 ounce package of Jell-O

Step 1: Combine ingredients in a medium size pot

Step 2: Cook over medium heat while stirring until the mixture thickens. It will be done when it’s too thick to mix

Step 3: Place on parchment paper until cool about 30 mins

Step 4: Play, when finished store in an air tight container or zip lock bag and keep in the refrigerator

 

Air Dry Clay or Oven Bake Recipe 

Materials: 2 cups flour, 1 cup salt, 1 cup water, 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Step 1: combine dry ingredients

Step 2: Add water and oil to mixture

Step 3: Knead together until smooth

Step 4: play and create.

Step 5: Let dry overnight (the thicker the shape the longer it will take to harden) then paint

 Optional Baking Method

Bake shapes at 250 for 50 minutes – 60 minutes let cool then decorate

Air Dry Recipe 

Materials: 1 cup water, 3 cups salt, 1 cup cornstarch

Step 1: In a pot mix water and salt

Step 2: Slowly add cornstarch to mixture while stirring over medium heat

Step 3: The mixture will start to thicken continue to stir until a ball can be formed

Step 4: Remove from heat and let cool for 30 mins

Step 5: Knead clay together until smooth

Step 6: Play and create

Step 7: Let dry overnight (the thicker the shape the longer it will take to harden) then paint

Bath Tub Crayons

These soapy crayons are easy to make and will make bath time more fun!

Materials:  2 cups of soap powder, Food Coloring, 1 cup water, Ice Cube/Popsicle Tray

 

Step 1: Mix the water and the soap powder together.

Step 2: Add food coloring to you get the color you like.  If you want more then one color put the soap/water mixture into separate containers before adding food coloring.

Step 3: Pour mixture into ice cube or popsicle tray and put in refrigerator until it hardens.

Step 4: Pop crayons out from tray and let kids use them to write in the bath tub

 *Creative Tip – Use silicone trays to create different shapes

This is a great craft that easy for kids of all ages.  This snow globes make perfect gifts from kids for parents or loved ones.  They are nice to put out for display.  Follow the step-by-step directions below to make your own snow globe.

Materials: Baby food Jar, small figurine (small cake toppers work great), Glitter, Water, Hot glue gun or shipping or duct tape (hot glue works best)
 
Step 1: Glue or tape a small figure to the inside of the top of the baby food jar. Make sure the figure is stuck on good and doesn’t move around.
Step 2: Put a spoon full of glitter into the baby food jar.
Step 3: Fill baby food jar with water.
Step 4: Put the top back on the baby food jar and close tightly.
Step 5: Shake snow glow and enjoy.

 

 

Paper Hand Puppet

This is a quick and easy hand puppet that kids will enjoy decorating and playing with.

Materials: Construction paper, things to decorate with such as crayons, markers paint, googly eyes etc…

 

Step 1: Fold construction paper into thirds longways

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Step 2: Fold both ends in so they meet at the middle of the paper
