Penny Shine

This is a great science experiment for young children.

Below are two ways to make the penny shiny.  One with lemon juice and then you can repeat the same steps and replace the lemon juice with hot sauce.  Children can compare which way the penny gets shinier and which way does it faster.  Children can also compare  which type  of hot sauce gets the penny shinier

Materials needed: Lemon Juice, Dull Penny, Cup

  1. Place the penny in a cup
  2. Cover the penny with lemon juice
  3. Wait 5-10 minutes
  4. Wipe the penny with a piece of paper towel
  5. The penny will appear much shiner

Penny’s start to look dull over time because the penny is made out of copper the copper mixes with the oxygen and oxides the penny causing it to look dull.  The acid in the lemon juice removes the oxide and makes the penny shiny again.

This experiment can also be done with a strong hot sauce.  Repeat the same steps as above but replace the lemon juice with the hot sauce.  It usually takes between 15-20 minutes to get the same results as the lemon juice.

1  Create a monster.  Your monster can be silly, scary, funny, big, little, colorful etc..  What is your monster’s name?  What does your monster eat?  Where does your monster live?  Is your monster nice or mean?  You can write the answers to the questions on the paper for the child or have them come up and share their drawing, while they are showing their picture ask them the questions about their monster.

2.  Create an animal.  This is the same as the monster but just an animal instead.

Group Writing

I’ve been working with kids on group writing and art projects.  The kids enjoyed these topics the best.

59.  Create an amusement park.  Discuss as a group the name of the park.  Have each member of the group write about the parts of the park.

A. What is the theme of your park.  Adventure, thrill rides, water rides, safari, etc…

B.  Write about the type of rides at the park.  Are there shows at the park?

C. Describe places to eat at the park, what type of food do they serve.

D. Do they have a gift shop?  What do they sell at your park.

Art Project:  On a large poster  board have each member of the group draw a park map.  List attractions, games, food, restrooms, gift shops, shows, etc..

 60. Create planet – Your group has just discovered a new planet.  Have a group discussion about the planet.  What is the name?  Do anyone live on the planet? Is there water on the planet? Did you find fossils, aliens, animals?  Is there oxygen? Is there plants, trees or water?  Have each member of the group write something about the planet.

Art Project: Make a planet out of paper mache.  Once dry, paint and decorate the planet.

Me Tree Self-Esteem Character Building Arts and Crafts Project for Kids

This is a fun activity to do with kids.  In this activity children will create a tree that represents positive things about themselves.  This is a great project that can be displayed in a classroom or on the wall of the child’s room to remind them about how special they are.

Materials: 11×14 white paper, construction paper, crayons, markers, glue
  1. Have each child draw a tree trunk with branches on the white paper.
  2. Have each child cut out leaves from the construction paper.
  3. On the leaves have each child write something they like about themselves.
  4. Glue the leaves to the tree.
  5. Have the children color the paper

Try this:
Instead of drawing a tree, draw a flower.  On each petal have the children write something positive above themselves.
